Midway
Midway is an atoll in the northern Pacific. The Midway Islands are an officially part of the United States. They belong to the outer areas of the USA. The islands lie in the middle of the Pacific and far away from other islands. They lie approximately in the middle of the way between Japan and the west coast of the United States of America. Midway consists of two islands. This island is called Sand Iceland, the other island called Eastern Iceland. Moreover, there still are further, very little islands. These islands are primarily lived in by animals like sea birds. The birds can brood on the little islands of Midway very well. Only few people ever were on the little islands of Midway.
Islands of Midway
The two main islands are very small, with a diameter of about six kilometer. The islands were unsettled a very long time. About 40 people live on the Eastern Island and the sand Island today. However, these are mainly scientists who work on Midway. There was never a permanent population on Midway. A large role played the atoll in the Second World War. Up to 2300 people lived on the two islands at that time. These were soldiers. Midway played a very important role in the war between the USA and Japan. Midway was confessed by the film "the battle of Midway" produced by Universal Studios. On the islands the navy had a base, here numerous aero planes moreover took off.
Discovery of Midwas Island
The secluded island was discovered about 150 years ago. The English seafarer N.C. Brooks discovered Midway 1859. The atoll is a part of the United States since 1867. The Hawaii islands became part of the American state 30 years later, too. The 20th century begins was built up, the American telephone company was stationed on Midway as the telephone network. She checked the telephone cord from there which was transferred under water of the USA to Japan. Also for flights from Asia to North America Midway was used. Today there is a modern Earthquake Surveillance Center stationed on the main island.
Besides science the atoll is primarily of great popularity for the tourism. Numerous cruise liner passes to Midway. Some tours stop even on Midway. So visitors can find out the island which played a large role in the past. The protection of the local animal kingdom is in the foreground. Midway is an official American nature reserve. The archipelago is currently submitted by the Home Office of the United States.
